IRON MEASUREMENTS

Iron is one of the ten elements being mapped by the Gamma Ray Spectrometer (GRS). Blue indicates low concentrations, and red indicates high concentrations. The distribution of iron can be used to identify basaltic regions (originating from volcanos) in the lunar maria (regions of dark, smooth, young crust). High iron concentrations show up in the near side maria (regions of dark, smooth, young crust), the south pole Aitken Basin impact basin, and Mare Australe. In addition to these previously-known iron-rich regions, other iron-rich regions have been found by the Lunar Prospector. Additional analysis is needed to confirm these findings, and to determine their origins.
