Ice on the Moon: Blazing a Trail

Introduction

Prospector is a NASA Discovery Mission.

This new program places an emphasis on science and 'Faster, Better, Cheaper' mission design and development. Lunar Prospector exemplifies these goals. However, if it were not for the many great minds and missions that blazed a trail before it, the craft might never have emerged from the imaginations of the Prospector Team.

After the Apollo Missions came to abrupt end in 1972, the United States experienced a hiatus in Lunar exploration. Then, in 1994, the Department of Defense (DoD) satellite Clementine, designed to track missiles, was put into a brief Lunar orbit. It yielded some interesting results.
