BLAZING A TRAIL

Introduction
Prospector is part of the NASA Discovery Program, a new program that places an emphasis on science as well as Faster, Better, Cheaper design and development. Lunar Prospector, a small and task-oriented craft, exemplifies these goals, but it would not have been possible without the many great minds and missions that blazed a trail into this new, galactic landscape: Apollo, Lunar Orbiter, Clementine, to name but a few.

In 1972, public interest in lunar exploration waned and the United States began a hiatus in lunar exploration. It lasted until 1994 when the Department of Defense (DoD) satellite Clementine was put into a brief lunar orbit; it yielded some interesting results.
