Mare Cognitum is located in a basin or large crater which
sits in the sencond ring of the Procellarum basin. The
mare formations are of the Upper Imbrian epoch, while
the surrounding basin material is of the Lower Imbrian
epoch. You can clearly make out the mountain range
Montes Riphaeus to the northwest of the mare. These
mountains are a part of the rim crest of the buried
crater or basin, containing the mare.

Also, notice the lighter grey area to the upper right of the
photo. This is Fra Mauro; the landing site of Apollo 14.
